SIREN project

SIREN project was a unique project run between 2020 - 2022, funded by the Europa Space Agency and realized by the scientific workers from the Lomnicky stit observatory Space Phycis Laboratory of Institute of Experimental Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

The project was focused on development of a university course for undergraduate students focused on cosmic ionizing radiation, dosimetry, metrology, radiation protection and radiation risks connected with high-altitude flights and spaceflights. Within the course, free electronic study materials (presentations and electronic study book) were developed.

The materials and course is available for free from for all universities now. If you are interested in offering the course at your university, do not hesitate to contact us.



Course content


Ionizing radiation

Charged particles, X/γ rays, neutron radiation, artificial sources of ionizing radiation etc.

Cosmic rays (CR)

Galactic cosmic rays, solar particles,Van Allen radiation belt, secondary cosmic rays etc.

Dosimetry basics

Basic terms, quantitites and their measurement, conversion of quantities etc.

Biological effects

Deterministic ans stochastic effects, radiation protection quantities etc.


Metrology

Metrology of X/γ, electron, heavy charged particle and neutron radiation etc.

Shielding

Radiation protection principles. Analytic and Monte Carlo shielding calculations etc.

Ground measurements

High mountain and altitude measurements. Neutron monitor, SEVAN instrument etc.

CR and spaceflights

Spacecrew radiation risks related to cosmic rays, shielding and protection etc.

ORDER THE COURSE

SIREN project course "Detection and dosimetry of cosmic rays" is offered as a package of three options discussed below. If you want to have it at your univeristy or just use the materials to enhance your existing course, just fill the request form available here and choose package that fits your needs.



Full course

Order full course including lecturer from IEP SAS. You pay only standard allowance for each lecture and lecturer time.

Only materials

Order only materials and use lecturer from your institution. You will choose, if you need additional training for lecturers or not.

Training course

If you wish to educate your lecturer in the course topics, you can select this option and we will organize a training course for him.

Practical exercises

Even with your lecturer(s), you can still ask IEP SAS to perform parctical exercises at the Lomnicky stit laboratory.
